Why is basic oral hygiene so important?
It is a startling fact that adults over 35 years of age lose more teeth to periodontal (gum) disease than that from cavities and decay! Whilst three quarters of adults are affected by this disease at some time in their life, this is a statistic that we can change! At our dental practice located in Thousand Oaks we know that one of the best ways to prevent the development of cavities and periodontal disease is to employ a regular oral maintenance program that includes good tooth brushing and flossing techniques performed twice daily.
What is periodontal disease and decay caused by?
Both of these oral diseases are caused by bacterial plaque, which is a substance that constantly forms on your teeth. Through regular brushing and flossing you can remove this plaque and help prevent the development of tooth decay and periodontal disease.
Why does plaque affect teeth?
Plaque is generated by the secretions made by microscopic bacteria on your teeth, and if this is not removed plaque can accumulate on your teeth to create a hard tartar. This tartar is virtually impossible to remove without professional assistance from a hygienist or dentist. If left, this tartar can erode the enamel of your teeth, making the patients susceptible to cavities, caries and infected dental pulp.
What is periodontal disease?
The bacteria found in plaque produce toxins that irritate the gums, and this can cause the gum tissue to become red, swollen and even bleed! If this process continues the gums can begin to separate from the teeth causing pockets to form. As the disease progresses it can cause gum tissue and jaw bone material to deteriorate – which in turn can lead to tooth loss.
What other factors can negatively impact on my oral health?

• Diabetes
• Stress
• Clenching and grinding teeth
